What is Love?

“Love is doing what will enthrall the beloved with the greatest and longest joy. What will enthrall the beloved this way is the glory of God. Love means doing all we can, at whatever cost to ourselves, to help people be enthralled with the glory of God. When they are, they are satisfied and God is glorified. Therefore loving people and glorifying God are one.”

— John Piper

“O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be loved… as to love.”

— Francis of Assisi

God fills us up with His perfect love in order to till the soil of our dry, thirsty hearts. Seeds are then perfectly planted by the Father’s hand; often times as a product of another individual’s bountiful harvest. Fruit comes forth, not so that we may partake of it ourselves. But rather, so that we might feed those who are hungry and who’s soil is ready for the planting. Love is not ours– it is God’s. Therefore, it is vital that we are continually consumed and lead by the Source of love. When we present ourselves to Him as an empty vessel He is always faithful to fill us with Himself, and only then are we able to share His love with the hungry world surrounding us. When we pattern our life after Jesus Christ, we act upon our redeemed will instead of our ever-shifting feelings. Upon making the decision to live out love in Jesus name, God is able to pass on His love though us. Once more, love comes “full-circle,” never-ending and always moving.
