Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.
Lifeguard training…check! Final chapel for the 2012-2013 Adelphia school year…check! A week of final student activities…check, check, check and check! Adelphia student move out day/check out… a big CHECK! R.A. appreciation dinner…check!
It’s hard to believe our first school year at Adelphia is quickly drawing to a close. We’ve sure had a wonderful time growing, learning and trusting God alongside the students and staff at Adelphia this past school year. But it’s time to transition from one season to the next.
This coming week the Adelphia students and Deans will be venturing out to practically serve and apply all that God has taught thus far. We getting ready for the final application…missions trips! This year we have two teams of students heading out. One team is being sent to Japan to work alongside a church planting organization and the other to an impoverished community down in Florida.
For Mr. E and me this means we are gearing up to lead a 10-day mission trip down in the “Sunshine State.” From April 23rd-May1st we will be in Orange County (FL) in a community by the name of “Bithlo.”
You may already be familiar with this area, but many aren’t, so here’s a little info about it:
Just down the road from Disney World, “the happiest place on earth,” Bithlo, FL is a small community located a mere 20 minutes away Orlando. However, Bithlo lacks a lot of the daily essentials that most communities in the U.S. have. Many people just drive by and ignore this small town, but not Tim McKinney and United Global Outreach. This year Adelphia Bible School will be travelling to Bithlo to come alongside Tim and UGO in extending hope and a helping hand to a community that is looking to “get back on it’s feet.”
While the people of Bithlo endure obstacles like poor drinking water, no public transportation and extreme poverty, perhaps one of their biggest burdens is the dysfunction that is found in most of the families. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse is not only common in Bithlo, but it’s ignored in many of the homes within this community.
After a group of 2011-2012 staff and students served Bithlo last year, Adelphia Bible School is looking forward to returning this year to walk alongside Tim and UGO to serve and love a community that is in desperate need of all the love it can get!
I wanted to extend an invitation to our friends, family and readers to join our team by lifting us up in prayer while we’re in Bithlo. We will be mostly serving by building relationships through working with the students at Orange County Academy (the local K-8th grade school). We’ll be tutoring, leading chapel, facilitating art, music and P.E. classes and sharing meals with these students. We even get to join them for a field trip! We’ll also be attending community events and helping out UGO with various labor projects in their “Transformation Village” (a UGO project that’s helping build the makings of a transformed community in Jesus name–things like a library, hair salon, post office, medical clinic, etc.).
For those of you who choose to partner with us in prayer, thank you! Similarly to the Honduras trip I took back in January, I will be posting day by day blogs after we arrive home. We look forward to reconnecting and sharing all the things God plans to do in and through us upon our return!
Grace and Peace,
Mr. and Mrs. E
